3 Reasons To Choose The Maldives For A Luxury Escape

The Maldives is one of the few places I have been to where the incredible images you see online live up to reality. The beaches, turquoise waters and magical marine life are all reason enough to visit, but a Maldives holiday offers more than that.

1. The Maldives is pure paradise

In a world that’s always on the go, the Maldives is one of the easiest places to completely switch off. Everywhere feels so serene, with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean from every corner, and pristine white sands underfoot.

The Maldives is the closest to paradise that I’ve ever visited, and waking up each day without feeling you have to scratch the top 10 things to do off your list, is a holiday like no other.

2. A holiday in the Maldives is a unique experience

A Maldives holiday offers a unique travel experience where every resort or hotel is located on a different island. Even the journey to your hotel feels special, you will either fly over the Indian Ocean by seaplane or arrive at your destination by speedboat, a world away from the usual airport transfer.

You can walk to bars and restaurants barefoot if you like, and the only people you will meet are friendly staff and fellow guests, creating an atmosphere of safety and exclusivity.

3. You can stay in an overwater bungalow

I can still picture my first visit to the Maldives as if it were yesterday. Sitting outside my overwater bungalow, watching reef sharks swim beneath me, I could hardly believe it was real.

There is an undeniable magic in staying in an overwater bungalow. Slipping on a snorkel to dive straight into the clear blue water, then watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean from your balcony, are the kinds of moments that are hard to find anywhere else.

3 Reasons Doha is the dream stopover destination

Doha is one of my favourite stop-over destinations when travelling East. Qatar is of one of the richest countries in the world, so it is no surprise that its capital is home to a futuristic skyline and architectural masterpieces. Qatari’s are proud of their heritage and like to show it off. Doha is the perfect choice for twin centre holidays to Maldives.

1. Doha’s top attractions are easily accessible

Doha’s main centre is packed with top attractions, so even if you can only stay a couple of nights, you will be surprised at how much you can do. We booked a private four-hour city tour, for a bargain price of €40, and visited Doha’s spectacular National Museum, strolled along the Corniche, explored the Cultural Village and Pearl Island, and shopped at remarkable Souq Waqif.

Corniche, Doha

Each stop offered a completely different experience – from the colourful Pearl Island, also known as the Arabian Riviera, to the architectural masterpiece that is the National Museum, and no visit to Doha would be complete without spending some time at the Souq Waqif.

The Souq Waqif is the beating heart of Doha and was originally built on the site of the old trading market. Its original Qatari buildings were restored rather than replaced, so it still has an authentic feel, which is a dramatic contrast to the backdrop of the modern skyline.

You can see my Instagram highlights from my stopover here.

Depending on the length of your stopover, you might also consider a day trip to the Arabian desert. Thrill seekers will love dune bashing or sand boarding, while nature lovers will be mesmerised that the sand dunes meet the Inland Sea. There are many desert safaris available too including sunrise and sunset tours including meals in traditional bedouin tents.

2. Doha has a vibrant social scene

The Pearl

Contrary to what you might think, Doha has a vibrant and sophisticated social scene, as well as mind-blowing shopping malls, Mykonos-inspired beach clubs, and romantic dining options, making it an ideal choice for a twin centre honeymoon.

Expect rooftop bars with skyline views, and luxury hotels with world-class dining options, including the biggest Nobu in the world. Don’t miss a trip to the Pearl, which is home to colourful terraces, contemporary restaurants and chic beach clubs.

Weekend brunch has to be done if visiting Doha, it is almost part of the modern culture now as the city is filled with expats. We chose Curiosa by Jean Georges at the Four Seasons, although there are numerous options to choose from.

Curiosa has an air conditioned outdoor terrace, and delicious food served to your table – many brunch offers are buffet style. It is available from 1pm – 4pm with unlimited cocktails, wine and spirts and a copious amount of food, I would highly recommend if visiting Doha.

Top Tip: The weekend in Doha is Friday and Saturday, but some hotels only offer brunch on Fridays.

3. Doha’s luxury hotels offer excellent value

The Travel Expert at the St Regis Hotel, Doha

Staying in one of Doha’s five-star hotels offers exceptional value compared to destinations such as Dubai. Doha’s hotels are renowned for their spacious rooms, striking modern design, and top-class dining options, with many properties also offering private beaches.

I stayed in the St Regis and was blown away by the value, as well as the standard and service. Check with the expert staff in Budget Travel, they will be able to recommend the right hotel and source great value two centre holidays to Doha and the Maldives.

3 Reasons to fly with Qatar Airways on your twin centre holiday

If you have been following me for a while you will probably have heard me rave about flying with Qatar Airways, but you don’t need to take my word for it – Qatar Airways has won the World’s Best Airline award for an unprecedented ninth time at the 2025 World Airline Awards.

1. Qatar Airways in flight service is superb

I was really impressed with Qatar Airways’ economy and business class service. In economy class there are over 8,500 in-flight entertainment options, unlimited drinks, and incredibly fast Starlink WiFi – this was the best WiFi I’ve experienced in the sky. It was also nice to get an amenity kit, and have comfortable headphones, a first for me in economy class!

And as for Business Class – it is the best in the world. The service on board and dine on demand offering is superb. Qatar Airways Q-Suites are similar to First Class Suites on other airlines, I’ve sampled single seats and the family Quad set-up, and both were top class. You can read my review of Qatar Airways service here, and Budget Travel will advise you on the best aircrafts to choose to maximise your experience.

2. Qatar Airways allows free stopovers in Doha

top things to do in Doha

Qatar Airways flies twice daily from Dublin Airport to Hamad International Airport with onward connections to 170 destinations worldwide. The flight cost from Dublin to your final destination allows for a complimentary stopover in Doha, making Qatar Airways the perfect choice for a twin centre holiday.

3. You can collect Avios when you fly with Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways

With the recent announcement from Tesco Ireland that you can now convert your Tesco Clubcard points to Avios – there has never been a better time to start boosting your Avios balance! And by booking a twin centre holiday flying with Qatar Airways, you can collect Avios for each flight. Simply join Qatar Airways Privilege Club before you fly.
