Where to stay on the Costa del Sol – Resort Guide

The resort you choose on the Costa del Sol depends on what you want to get out of your holiday. From up-scale beach resorts to traditional old towns, there are many places to choose from. In my Costa del Sol resort guide I have listed the most popular resorts to choose, as well the best Costa del Sol hotels and apartments to suit your holiday style.

Malaga City

Malaga is the main city of the Costa del Sol and the location of the airport you’ll be flying into. Although many holidaymakers go straight to the nearby beach resorts, Malaga city is well worth a visit, especially if you’re staying nearby. It’s a fantastic destination for a day trip, or better still, stay for a couple of nights and explore its top attractions and sample its delicious cuisine.

Sarah stayed here recently and has lots of recommendations in her Malaga travel guide:

Torremolinos

Torremolinos, Costa del Sol

Torremolinos is one of the most popular and affordable destinations on the Costa del Sol, known for its wide beaches, vibrant nightlife, and a diverse selection of restaurants and bars. Located just 10 minutes from Malaga Airport, it’s incredibly convenient to reach and is ideal for a short beach break.

This lively resort is one of the best resorts for LGBTQ+ holidaymakers and features both a charming old town and a modern promenade along the beach. For a change of scenery, the picturesque marina of Benalmadena is nearby, and there’s also a waterpark to enjoy.

It is also just a short trip by taxi or train to nearby city of Malaga and also within easy reach of the stunning cliff path walk – Caminito del Rey.

Benalmadena

Benalmadena, Costa del Sol

Benalmadena is one of the main resorts on the Costa del Sol. It’s a charming family friendly destination with a mix of beaches and cultural attractions, as well as a lively destination for party goers – its lively 24 hour is the top spot for night owls.

Its marina is one of the main selling points with loads of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from. There’s also a Sea Life aquarium that features a variety of marine life, including sharks, rays, and sea turtles. It’s an educational and fun experience for families.

Fuengirola

Fuengirola, Costa del Sol

A bustling coastal town with a 7km long beach and a marina, this is another favourite with holidaymakers especially families and couples as there’s good value hotels and apartments. The charming old town is typical Spanish style and has superb tapas bars and boutique, as well as high street stores such as Zara and Mango, while the beachfront has a lively promenade filled with cafes, bars and restaurants.

Fuengirola is also home to the scenic Fuengirola Zoo and the historic Sohail Castle, offering panoramic views of the coastline. As well as the shopping in the old town, there’s a fantastic shopping centre nearby with a bigger choice of high street stores.

Marbella

Marbella, Costa del Sol

Marbella is known for its glitz and glamour, and is one of the most upmarket resorts on the Costa del Sol. There are two sides to Marbella, its authentic old town which is ideal for couples or a group of friends looking for stylish bars and restaurants, and the glitzy marina of Puerto Banus, which is about 15 minutes drive away – this is where you will find designer shops and overpriced restaurants, as well as the odd Ferrari whizzing past!

Marbella is popular for girls trips as there are some great beach clubs to choose from as well as great restaurants and nightlife. It is also popular with golfers as there is more than one nearby golf course. However, families are not overlooked either, as some of the best hotels for families on the Costa del Sol are located here.

Accommodation can be expensive here as it is highly sought after by families, party-goers and golf groups especially from May – October.

Nerja

Nerja, Costa del Sol

Nerja is one of Spain’s most cherished resorts and is often considered the jewel of the Costa del Sol. It boasts an authentic Spanish atmosphere and is just 40 minutes from Malaga Airport. With its charming low rise buildings, cobblestone narrow streets, and breathtaking sea views, Nerja attracts both Spanish holidaymakers and international visitors.

You can enjoy tapas in one of the many picturesque plazas, sip a cocktail while taking in the views from the Balcon de Europa, or simply relax on one of its beautiful beaches.

Estepona

Estepona, Costa del Sol

Estepona is a quieter, more traditional resort, with lovely beaches and a charming old town. It is perfect for a peaceful escape on the Costa del Sol, yet its proximity to Puerto Banus ( 20 minutes away ) makes it a good choice for holidaymakers looking for a relaxing holiday, but within easy reach of nightlife.

The old town is a maze of winding streets decorated with bright flower pots, whitewashed buildings, and a lively square. With around 21 km of coastline, Estepona offers a variety of beaches. Playa de la Rada is one of the most popular, with its golden sand and calm waters, ideal for swimming and sunbathing.

If you wanted to be close to Marbella and Puerto Banus but not stay there, then choose nearby Estepona.

Mijas

Mijas

Mijas is a beautiful town on the Costa del Sol offering a perfect combination of stunning coastal views, traditional Spanish charm, and a relaxed atmosphere. Mijas is divided into two parts Mijas Pueblo the picturesque village, and Mijas Costa the coastal area, it is important to keep note of this when booking accommodation, particularly if you want to stay near a beach.

Mijas is not as popular as its neighbouring resorts, but accommodation tends to be more reasonably priced here.

Sotogrande

Sotogrande

Sotogrande is an exclusive, upscale resort town on the Costa del Sol and offers a more relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere, compared to some of its busier neighbours. Sotogrande is famous for its golf courses, including the renowned Real Club Valderrama, one of the best golf courses in Europe and host of the Ryder Cup. It also has a stunning marina lined with restaurants and markets.
