With the cost of living rising, it seems everyone is on the lookout for cheap European city breaks, so I’ve found 20 of the most affordable cities to inspire your next trip. Swap the usual tourist hotspots and expensive cities like London, Paris and Rome, and find better value for money and fewer crowds in these cheap European city breaks.
Take advantage of numerous cheap flights direct from Ireland to most of the listed cities, and try to travel mid-week or during the off-season to get the best value short break.
1. Prague, Czech Republic

Some of the best cities for a budget-friendly trip are located in Eastern Europe. Prague stands out as an excellent option for cheap European city breaks, offering a blend of history, stunning architecture, and affordable food and drinks.
There are plenty of free activities to enjoy in Prague, as the city is all about its historic Old Town. Stroll across the iconic Charles Bridge offering breathtaking views of the city, and explore the grounds of Prague Castle and admire St. Vitus Cathedral – all without an entry fee. Don’t miss the Astronomical Clock Show, a unique display that takes place every hour in Old Town Square.

2. Vilnius , Lithuania.

I visited Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, this year, and was pleasantly surprised by how stunning the city is. The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is absolutely beautiful and exceptionally well maintained.
While Vilnius may not have a wide range of activities, you’re only about 10 minutes away from the ski slopes of Liepkalnis, and I can imagine, the Christmas markets here are amazing. Be sure to take advantage of the free sights, like climbing to the top of Gediminas’ Hill, exploring the quirky Republic of Užupis, or relaxing at Vingis Park.
I stayed in a gorgeous 4-star Radisson Hotel with a sauna, jacuzzi, and a rooftop bar for only €67 per night.

3. Krakow, Poland

Poland is a top pick for cheap European city breaks, and Kraków has become increasingly popular in recent years – personally, I consider it one of the best cities in Eastern Europe. Krakow offers a variety of things to explore, all while being affordable in terms of food, drinks, and accommodation. The city is ideal for a long weekend getaway, with a vibrant city centre full of life and endless things to do.
While winter is often considered a great time for a snowy retreat, Kraków is equally wonderful in the spring or summer. There are many things to do in Kraków, including visiting the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine, Wawel Castle, the Auschwitz concentration camp, and the nearby Zakopane.

4. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is undoubtedly one of my favourite cities in Europe, and one of the cheapest city breaks I’ve been on. You only need a 2 or 3 night weekend trip here to explore the city’s sights, many of which are free. You can visit the Government Building, St. Stephen’s Bastion, and the Shoes on the Danube – all at no cost. For a relaxing experience, you can unwind at the Széchenyi baths for a full day from €43, or enjoy a Danube cruise with unlimited Prosecco for just €25, or €17 with just a welcome drink!
During my trip in 2022, I enjoyed delicious food and cocktails at the beautiful 360 rooftop igloo garden, all for no more than €50!

5. Riga, Latvia

Riga, the capital of Latvia, is a charming and affordable European city break. With its stunning architecture, historic Old Town, and lively nightlife, it offers a perfect blend of culture and entertainment, without breaking the bank. Along with Vilnius, I’d say these are the two cheapest cities in the Baltics.
There are plenty of free sights to explore, including the House of the Blackheads, Riga Central Market, the Three Brothers, and the National Library, which offers a fantastic city view. Simply wandering through the cobbled streets of the Old Town is a wonderful experience in itself.
I visited mid week but would have loved to experience the lively bars and clubs on the weekend. While in Riga, I also took advantage of an incredibly cheap spa day for only €27!

6. Tallinn, Estonia

Both Sarah and I have visited Tallinn, Estonia, and absolutely loved the charming medieval city. While it may not be as cheap as some of its Baltic neighbours like Riga or Vilnius, which are also featured in this guide, it still offers great value compared to current prices in Ireland or other European cities like London or Paris.
Strolling through the city feels like stepping back in time, with its medieval buildings, charming shops, and the overall atmosphere. You can also take a day trip by ferry to Helsinki, Finland, although it’s not exactly a budget friendly city.

7. Bratislava, Slovakia

Bratislava in Slovakia is definitely an underrated European destination. It’s easily accessible from both Vienna and Budapest, making it a great option for a multi-city trip. I fell in love with Bratislava with when I visited. The city felt almost empty, and it was like I had it all to myself. Though small, it’s packed with hidden gems, vibrant nightlife, and friendly locals.
The city is very walkable, with attractions like the Old Town, Bratislava Castle, and the iconic Blue Church all free to visit. It’s perfect for those seeking cheap European city breaks, offering great value. Public transport is also super reasonable.

Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is definitely on my list to visit this year. I’ve heard fantastic things from friends who have been recently. Often overlooked, it’s a hidden gem that offers great value for budget travellers.
The city blends vibrant nightlife with a deep historical heritage, making it possible to have a fantastic city break without spending too much. For those wanting to explore beyond the city, a road trip to Brasov and Dracula’s Castle is the perfect way to experience more of the country.
A visit to the popular Therme spa is a must, where a day pass costs only €29, granting access to indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, Jacuzzis, water slides, massage water beds, and a wave pool.

I visited Istanbul in Turkey for four nights in 2022 and absolutely loved everything about the city. It’s fascinating that you can experience both the European and Asian sides, with the ferry between them costing only €1.60. Be sure to visit iconic landmarks like Galata Tower, Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, or shop to your heart’s content at the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world.
Top Tip: One thing to keep in mind is that the Turkish Lira often offers great exchange rates during the winter months, so it’s a good idea to monitor the currency rates when planning your trip.

Having visited Gdansk for the Christmas markets in 2022, I can confidently say that it’s one of the most affordable cities I’ve been to. Located in the north of Poland along the Baltic coast, Gdansk offers a variety of experiences, from scenic cruises showcasing the city’s sights, to strolling through the historic Old Town, or exploring the World War II Museum.
The apartment I stayed in was gorgeous and cost only €50 per night over a weekend. For food and drink, I highly recommend Słony Spichlerz, an upscale food and drinks court that’s perfect for a night out.

Often overshadowed by Lisbon and the Algarve, Porto is one of the best european cities offering excellent value for money. Known as a food lover’s paradise, the city blends rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning views along the Douro River. Porto has a charming atmosphere with its narrow streets, colourful buildings, and historic landmarks.

It’s quite unusual to find a place in Greece on this list, especially the capital city, given that islands like Santorini and Mykonos are famously expensive.
I only visited Athens for a few hours on a stopover so can’t say I noticed how cheap it was personally, however I have been told it offers good value for money. Explore the ancient Acropolis, wander through the narrow streets of the charming Plaka neighbourhood, and visit the Panathenaic stadium the site of the first modern Olympic Games.

Valletta, the capital of Malta and a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers plenty of budget friendly experiences. You can enjoy a free walking tour to take in the amazing views throughout the city, enjoy a stroll through the Barracca Gardens, and visit St. John’s Cathedral.
Many museums in Valletta, such as the National Museum of Archaeology or the Malta Experience, have affordable entrance fees, between €5-€10. Additionally, you can explore the Grand Harbour area, a picturesque spot where you can enjoy stunning views at no cost.

Free or cheap activities include the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Zaimov Park and the cities amazing street art. You can also take a day trip to Skopje in North Macedonia or Nis in Serbia.

16. Tirana, Albania

Tirana, the capital of Albania, is a good value destination for budget travellers and one of the best cheap European city breaks, combining history, culture and affordable prices. Tirana is a destination that may not spring to mind, but with the new direct flight from Dublin in April 2026 why not take a visit and see how cheap it is for yourself.
Free or cheap things to do include a visit to Skanderbeg Square in the heart of Tirana, surrounded by historical landmarks. Bunk’Art offers affordable insights into Albania’s communist history. The Pyramid of Tirana provides panoramic city views, while Grand Park and the Artificial Lake are perfect for a free stroll or picnic.
A cable car ride to Mount Dajti offers stunning views for about €8 round-trip. If your into hiking there are amazing trails outside the city like Gamti Mountain or take a day trip to nearby Ohrid in North Macedonia.

17. Ljubljana, Slovenia

Many consider Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, a hidden gem, especially Irish holidaymakers, as there are no direct flights to Slovenia.However, Ljubljana is easily accessible from both Trieste Airport and Zagreb.
The city’s charming old town, with its colourful buildings and the impressive castle, is ideal for exploring on foot. Small and easy to navigate, Ljubljana offers plenty of free attractions, including Tivoli Park, the Dragon Bridge, and beautiful views along the Ljubljanica River.
A visit to the famous Lake Bled is a must do, it is just a 45-minute drive from the city. Known for its stunning scenery, the lake features an iconic island with a picturesque church, and a castle on a cliff overlooking the water. Entrance to the castle costs only €13, and a boat ride to the island is usually around €15.

You can also take in panoramic views from Aleksotas Hill Viewpoint (which offers free admission) and discover the beauty of Kaunas Reservoir and Pažaislis Monastery.

Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of the Balkans most beautiful and historical cities. It’s a fantastic budget-friendly destination, often overlooked by Irish holidaymakers due to the lack of direct flights from Ireland.
While still somewhat under the radar, it has become a popular day trip from nearby Croatia, and I’m looking forward to experiencing it myself this summer. Free attractions include watching divers jump off the huge bridge into the river, exploring the old bazaar and hiking to Fortica Viewpoint.

As a popular cruise port, the town can get quite busy in summer, but with its beautiful scenery, it’s easy to see why. It’s also becoming more popular with backpackers, though prices have risen in recent years.
There are plenty of free and budget friendly activities to enjoy, such as exploring the Old Town’s charming cobbled streets, hiking up to Kotor Fortress, relaxing by the bay, and riding the mountain alpine coaster for just €7.
