Top 10 Alternative Christmas Markets In Europe For a Festive Getaway

Experience Europe’s alternative Christmas markets this year with colourful stalls, tasty food and festive charm to spark your festive spirit.

You may have already seen my post on Europe’s Top 15 Christmas Markets, but with this article I wanted to cast the net a bit wider. There are many other fantastic destinations across Europe that deserve our attention. So why not give yourself yourself a festive treat this year and take a peek at my best alternative Christmas markets for 2025.

 1. Zurich, Switzerland

This Swiss city is the perfect Christmas market destination for both adults and children alike. Zurich transforms into a winter wonderland in the run up to Christmas. There are multiple Christmas markets to choose from, with the most famous being at the Zurich Opera House, Zurich Old Town and Zurich Main Station also. A particular highlight for me is at the Zurich Main Station where every year a Christmas tree glistens with 7,000 Swarkovski diamonds.

The dates for these markets are November 20 – December 23, 2025 see more here.

2. Hamburg, Germany

Best Alternative Christmas Markets - christmas market break in Vienna

Hamburg is one of my favourite cities, regardless of the time of year. There is however, something a little bit extra special about the Hamburg Christmas Markets. Taking a stroll along the river Elbe at this time of year is nothing short of enchanting. The Germans know how to do a Christmas market the right way. A mug of Glühwein is nearly a rite of passage for anyone looking to have an authentic Christmas market experience.

The City Hall Christmas market takes place from the November 25 to December 23, 2025 see more here.

3. Riga, Latvia

Riga, the capital of Latvia, is one of Europe’s most enchanting Christmas destinations. The city’s medieval Old Town transforms into a festive wonderland, with markets in Dome Square and Livu Square filled with wooden stalls selling gingerbread, mulled wine, and traditional Latvian crafts. Choirs and folk groups perform carols, while twinkling lights and the scent of cinnamon create a magical atmosphere throughout the cobbled streets.

Riga’s blend of Gothic architecture, cosy cafés, and lively holiday traditions makes it an ideal Christmas city break, combining culture, history, and festive charm in equal measure.

The dates for the Riga Christmas markets are November 29 – 1st January see more here.

4. Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg

What French Christmas is complete without sampling some raclette and fondue. Dishes which are synonymous with French culture will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. They also set you up perfectly for an evening of ambling in and out of Christmas market stalls. There’s nothing more relaxing than an evening enjoying music and wine with a loved one in the stunning city of Strasbourg.

The Strasbourg Christmas market runs from the 26th November to December 24th 2025 , giving you plenty of chance to visit “The Capital of Christmas” in 2025. See more here.

5. Bratislava, Slovakia

Bratislava in Slovakia is definitely an underrated European destination, and it really comes alive during the festive season. The city hosts charming Christmas markets across its squares, with the Main Square and Hviezdoslav Square being the most popular.

Wooden stalls serve local specialities such as lokše (potato pancakes), mead, and mulled wine, while handmade gifts and ornaments make for perfect souvenirs. The atmosphere is made even more magical with twinkling lights, a large Christmas tree, and free concerts and performances.

Easily accessible from both Vienna and Budapest, Bratislava is a great option for a multi-city trip. Though small, it’s full of hidden gems, vibrant nightlife, and friendly locals.

The Bratislava Christmas market runs from the 27th November to 6th January. See more here.

6. Gdansk, Poland

I visited Gdańsk for the Christmas markets in 2022, and it quickly became one of my favourite affordable European destinations. Set on the Baltic coast, the city combines a beautiful Old Town with fascinating history and lively festive celebrations. Its markets were even voted the best in Europe last year, with stalls, decorations, and entertainment spread across the city.

Beyond the markets, Gdańsk offers plenty to explore, from the World War II Museum to scenic harbour cruises and great shopping.

The main Christmas market takes place in Targ (Coal Market Square) from November 21st to December 23rd, 2025. See more here.

7. Vilnius, Lithuania

I visited Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, this year, and was pleasantly surprised by how stunning the city is. The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is absolutely beautiful and exceptionally well maintained.

While Vilnius may not have a wide range of activities, you’re only about 10 minutes away from the ski slopes of Liepkalnis, and I can imagine, the Christmas markets here are amazing. Be sure to take advantage of the free sights, like climbing to the top of Gediminas’ Hill, exploring the quirky Republic of Užupis, or relaxing at Vingis Park.

The 2025 Vilnius Christmas Market dates will be November 29 – December 28, 2025. See more here.

8. Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is a hidden gem at Christmas. Its main market in Consti tution Square, set against the backdrop of the Palace of the Parliament, is one of the country’s largest. Visitors will find rows of wooden chalets selling crafts, ornaments, and festive treats, along with an ice rink, concerts, and a glittering Christmas tree.

If you want to venture beyond the capital, you can head to Brașov for its own magical market and explore the legendary Bran Castle, better known as Dracula’s Castle. If you fancy a break from the cold, the nearby Therme spa provides a warm escape with pools, saunas, and wellness treatments, making it the perfect balance to your festive city break.

The Bucharest Christmas Market dates aren’t confirmed just yet but check updates here.

9. Bruges, Belgium

Bruges canals

Explore the charming Belgian city of Bruges, a slightly lesser known gem when it comes to European Christmas markets. If you’re up for a bit of travelling, you can easily squeeze in three Christmas markets in one weekend, with Ghent and Brussels just a short train or bus ride away.

In Bruges, indulge in Belgian waffles, craft beers, and chocolate dreams while browsing the Christmas market, which takes place annually in the city’s stunning main market square. Expect twinkling lights, cosy wooden stalls, and the scent of festive treats filling the air.

Bruges’ Christmas markets are open from 21st November 2025 to 4th January 2026, making them an ideal choice for a pre or post Christmas market break – see more here.

10. Frankfurt, Germany

Frankfurt is often overlooked by the other German cities of Berlin, Nuremburg and Munich for Christmas markets. The Frankfurt Christmas market begins at Roßmarkt and winds its way along the lively Zeil promenade down to Römerberg and the River Main. Along the route, visitors can browse beautifully decorated stalls filled with handicrafts and festive treats from around the world. At Römerberg, a magnificent Christmas tree towers over the square, framed by the charming half-timbered houses of the Old Town and the historic St Paul’s Square.

The 2025 Frankfurt Christmas Market dates will be November 24 – December 23, 2025. See more here.
