Did you know there are a staggering 1,430 islands in Thailand? Although only about 50 offer accommodation, it can still be overwhelming trying to decide which island to visit in Thailand. But that’s where I come in! I’ve travelled extensively throughout Thailand in both 2022 and 2023, visiting seven of the islands featured below. I’ve compiled all of my top tips to help you choose the best Thai islands to holiday in. Plus, I’ve included the best things to do on each island and useful advice to help you decide which are the most beautiful islands in Thailand to visit to match your holiday style.

Thailand is located in Southeast Asia and is home to some of the world’s most beautiful islands, scattered across the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. It’s easily accessible from Europe, with numerous direct and connecting flights to major airports such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Krabi. From these gateways, well-organized domestic flights, ferries, and speedboats make reaching the islands simple and convenient. With stunning natural landscapes, vibrant culture, and reliable transport links, Thailand’s islands offer travellers an ideal mix of adventure, relaxation and tropical charm.
Weather in Thailand – and the best time to visit
Thailand has a tropical climate with three main seasons: the hot season March to June, the rainy season July to October, and the cool season November to February. To avoid the rainy season, consider visiting the islands in the Gulf of Thailand such as Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao between April and October.
In contrast, destinations on the Andaman Sea like Krabi, Phuket, and Koh Phi Phi are best experienced from November to April. Overall, the most favourable time to visit Thailand is generally between December and April.

Best Months to travel: November – April.
Best For: Waterparks, Day trips and Food Markets.
Phuket is considered one of the best islands in Thailand to visit, and having an international airport makes it exceptionally easy to reach. I highly recommend Phuket for all types of travellers, including families and couples. The island features a charming old town, temples, waterparks, and fantastic day trips to nearby islands.
My personal highlights include visiting Big Buddha and exploring the Sunday Walking Street Market in Phuket Old Town. For those looking for a lively atmosphere, Patong Beach is known for its vibrant nightlife, so it might be best for families to choose alternative areas.
Top Tip: If you are planning to just stay in Phuket, I highly recommend a day trip to the Koh Phi Phi islands while your there. Also try to visit Phuket old town on a Sunday for the walking street market.
Phuket is a large and diverse island, so choosing the right area to stay is important. Families often avoid Patong, as it’s known for its lively nightlife scene and is popular with young backpackers.
Recommended resorts: Karon, Kata, and Bang Tao.
For young and lively backpackers: Patong beach.
Food Recommendations: Malin Plaza Market, Naughty Nuri’s, No.6 Restaurant & Dang all in Patong. Five Olives & Unni’s in Bang Tao.
Krabi
Best Months to visit: November – April
Best For: Relaxing, Shopping and Day trips.
Krabi is part of the mainland, so technically its not an island, but it is often considered one by holidaymakers, and is a popular destination in Thailand to visit.
Ao Nang is the main beach resort. It is lined with shops, bars and great restaurants and has a super holiday feel. You can do many day trips from Ao Nang including Railay Beach, Rock climbing, Hot springs and Krabi old town.
Best resort to stay: Ao Nang Beach Area
Don’t miss: Ao Nang Landmark Night Market & Railay Beach Day Trip
Top Tip: There is no need to book a tour to Railay beach just jump on the longtail boat. Get a ticket from the kiosk beside the beach for €4 return and explore the area yourself!
Koh Phi Phi Island
Best Months to visit: November- March
Best For: Partying, Snorkelling and Viewpoints.
Koh Phi Phi is a small island not far from Phuket, but it certainly punches above its weight in terms of beauty. It is possibly the most beautiful island in Thailand, with pretty winding streets and amazing turquoise waters. It is a popular choice for day trips from Phuket and Krabi, so expect it to be busy!
No cars are allowed on the island so everyone rents bikes or gets around by foot. It is also known for some great beach parties and fire shows. If your into hiking or some adventure check out the Phi Phi viewpoints they are not to disappoint.
The popular day trips include some of the most popular islands in Thailand to visit, including Maya Bay from the movie ‘The Beach’, Monkey beach and James bond Island.
Please note if you are visiting over Christmas, New year or Easter make sure to book your accommodation well in advance to avoid disappointment – the island is small and it fills up fast.
Top Tip: To avoid the crowds book a private boat trip and leave earlier so you can have the main sights all to yourself.

Koh Lanta
Best Months to visit: November- March
Best For: Local Culture, Sunsets and Exploring.
Koh Lanta may not be on everyone’s list, as its not as easy to reach as other islands. However, it is the perfect choice for travellers who prefer a quieter more relaxed island vibe. Explore Koh Lanta Old Town by taking a leisurely stroll through its markets and savouring fresh seafood at the waterfront restaurants. Koh Lanta is one of Thailand best islands for couples.
Best area to stay: Klong Khong Beach or Long beach are the most convenient locations.

Koh Yao Yai & Koh Yao Noi
Best Months to Visit: November – April
Best For: Tranquillity, local culture, wellness retreats.
These two peaceful sister islands are located between Phuket and Krabi and are perfect for travellers looking to escape the crowds. With scenic rice fields, fishing villages, and a laid-back vibe, they’re ideal for couples or solo travellers seeking authentic Thai island life.
Top Tip: Rent a scooter to explore the villages and beaches at your own pace.
Koh Lipe
Best Months to Visit: November – April
Best For: Swimming, Snorkelling and Relaxing.
Koh Lipe is actually closer to Malaysia, but is part of Thailand. This stunning small island is worth a visit if you have time. Known for its beautiful beaches and friendly locals, everyone I know who has visited the island loved it. Activities on the island include snorkelling, kayaking and island hopping, so you wont be stuck for things to do.
Top Tip: Please be aware that during the low season, reaching Koh Lipe can be challenging. You might need to use multiple modes of transportation, and the journey could take several hours. It’s a good idea to confirm boat and bus schedules in advance when planning your trip. It is also worth booking your accommodation in advance for travel in high season.
Gulf Islands of Thailand
Koh Samui
Best Months to visit: April – October
Best For: Food Markets, Sunsets and Temples.
Similar to Phuket, the island of Koh Samui is very popular with families, and is one of the top islands in Thailand to visit. especially during the European summer school holidays, as the weather is usually better – the weather in Koh Samui tends to be dry from June – September.
You can fly here directly from Bangkok and Phuket but not internationally like you once could. There is so much to do and see on the island including the best day tour I have ever been on to Ang Thong National park.
Best area to stay: Chewang Beach or Lamai.
Food recommendation: Central Market Chewang (Thursday-Saturday) & La Fabrique Lamai
Top tip: Don’t miss Fisherman’s village market and Coco Tams, which is a great spot to watch fire shows and enjoy the sunset on your trip to Koh Samui.
Koh Phangan
Best Months to visit: April – October
Best For: Exploring, Relaxing and Beaches .
Renowned for its world famous Full Moon Party, Koh Phangan is one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand – this underrated gem shouldn’t be missed!
For a great stay, consider Baan Tai, where you can find beach bungalows for as low as €10 per night. Thong Sala is another popular area, centrally located near the pier with a bustling food market and numerous shopping stalls.
I suggest you rent a scooter to explore the island’s attractions, including waterfalls, Zen beach, the Koh Ma sandbar island and scenic viewpoints – but make sure you have adequate insurance! Although regarded as one of the best party islands in Thailand, Koh Phangan offers so much more.
Best area to stay – Baan Tai or Thong Sala.

Koh Tao
Best Months to visit: April – October
Best For: Snorkelling, Viewpoints and Sunsets.
Looking to scuba dive? Look no further than Koh Tao. It is one of the cheapest places in the world to dive and has amazing marine life. Koh Tao meaning Turtle Island is a small island near Koh Samui with tonnes to see and do.
Do not miss a day trip over to Koh Nang Yuan. It has very similar vibes to Koh Phi Phi, but not as busy. You’ll really enjoy this Thai island if you choose to visit.

What is the nicest island in Thailand?
This totally depends on the type of traveller you are and experiences you are looking for. Personally I loved Koh Phangan. It has so many hidden gems and the best white-sand beaches I have ever seen. The island is known for the full moon party, but beyond the partying I feel it is underrated and I personally believe it is the most beautiful island in Thailand.
I loved renting a scooter here and visiting all the hidden beaches, waterfalls and viewpoints. Koh Phi Phi is also very special. The island is small and doesn’t allow any cars or motorbikes so everyone gets around by bike or on foot. It has the perfect mix of beaches, day trips and nightlife.
How many islands are there in Thailand?
Definitely more than you would think! There are over 1400 islands in Thailand, although only 50 of these have accommodation. These islands offer a diverse range of experiences, from bustling tourist spots to lush getaways, it is no wonder island hopping in Thailand is just a popular holiday experience.
Is Thailand expensive?
Generally speaking Thailand is not expensive especially compared to Europe, but not all islands have similar prices – some are more costly than others. Generally, the more popular the island, the higher the prices. For instance, Phuket, with its international airport, attracts a large number of tourists annually, and its popular resorts tend to be pricier compared to those on less-known islands.
Top Tip: Local dishes and street food always offer the best value.
A local meal should cost between €1 – €5 depending on location.
Western food (Burgers, Pizzas etc) €5- €15.
Scooter rental €5 per day
Cocktails €2.50- €10 depending on location
Tours roughly €7 – €40.
Which Thai island is the cheapest?
Personally, I found Koh Lanta to offer the best value. Unlike Phuket or Koh Phi Phi, it doesn’t attract as many tourists, which might contribute to its affordability. The island is more spread out, and local businesses tend to keep their prices low and competitive. For example, I paid just €7 for a full-day boat tour in Koh Lanta, but you might pay double this in Koh Phi Phi.
What is the best time of year to visit the Thai islands?
The best island to visit in Thailand really depends on the time of year you are visiting and your personal holiday style. However, if you want to try to avoid the rainy season, it is best to visit the islands in the Gulf of Thailand, such as Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao from April to October.
In contrast, Krabi, Phuket, and Koh Phi Phi are best enjoyed from November to April. Overall, the optimal time to visit Thailand is likely between December and April.
10 Top Tips for visiting Thailand
- Pack Light: Due to the heat and humidity, bring only your lightest and most comfortable summer clothes. There is no need for heels, fancy dresses or long sleeved items.
- Communication Tip: Thai people are very kind and polite, but speak slowly to ensure they can understand you.
- Currency: The local currency is baht. It might be confusing at first, but remember that approximately 40 baht equals €1, and 400 baht equals €10. This conversion can help you get accustomed to the prices.
- Transport: Getting around is so easy, as tuk-tuks and ferries are plentiful. Always book locally or use online booking services like 12GoAsia. For busy routes over popular holidays like Christmas and new year please try book in advance.
- Visa: For Irish passport holders you will get a visa on arrival into Thailand for a 30 day stay and this can be extended if you wish at the immigration office. From May 2025 you need to fill out an arrival card before you travel. See more here.
- Food: If you’re not a fan of Thai food, Western options can be pricey, especially in restaurants. However, it’s worth trying local dishes—you might end up liking them! My favourites are Koh Soi, Pad Thai, Yellow Noodles and Mango sticky rice. Start with the easy food like Satay, Curries and Roti. Don’t be afraid to try the street food especially in markets as its some of the tastiest food I’ve ever had. My favourites were Malin Plaza in Patong, Phuket and Koh Phangan food court.
- Tipping: Tipping isn’t compulsory in Thailand, so workers don’t expect it. However, it’s a nice gesture since everything is quite affordable.
- ATM Fees: Be aware that ATM fees can be high. It’s better to withdraw larger amounts of cash at once and keep it secure.
- Full Moon Party: If you’re young and backpacking, plan your trip around the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan. Even if you’re not into partying, the island’s vibrant atmosphere is worth experiencing.
- Bargain: Don’t hesitate to negotiate prices for everything, including tours, clothes, and tuk-tuks.
I have been to Thailand three times now and can honestly say its one of the best places I’ve ever travelled to.
