My Ultimate Guide on Where To Stay in New York – From Great Value Apartments to Luxury Hotels

My ultimate guide on where to stay in New York includes luxury hotels, modern apartments, and great value options.

One of the things I love about New York, is that each neighbourhood has such a different vibe – it almost feels like there are multiple cities in one. Staying Uptown near Central Park offers a completely different experience to staying in Times Square or Greenwich Village, so I recommend taking some time to decide where to stay in New York, to make sure you find the right location to suit you.

Where to stay in New York – The Best Neighbourhoods to Choose

First time visitors to New York will usually want to stay in Midtown Manhattan. However, the hustle and bustle of Times Square can be too much for some people, so if you do want to stay in Midtown but prefer to be away from the noise, make sure to choose a hotel a few blocks away from Times Square.

Uptown Manhattan has a more relaxed upmarket feel and is very close to Central Park, so if you want a break from the skyscrapers and noise of the city, this is a good area to choose.

Downtown Manhattan usually offers the best value hotels in New York. It is the home of Wall Street and are close to the trendy neighbourhoods of Soho, Greenwich and Hudson Yards, as well as having easy access to the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn. Downtown areas in some cities don’t have the best reputation, but Downtown Manhattan is a great place to stay. I have stayed here many times and like it.

Regular visitors to New York will probably choose not to stay in any of these three areas, but chose trendy neighbourhoods in New York, such as Soho, Greenwich Village or Meatpacking District instead. The West Village is one of my own personal favourite New York neighbourhoods and after walking across the Brooklyn Bridge into DUMBO recently, I think I would like to stay in Brooklyn next time!

Rooms here are compact but stylish and well-appointed for the price – but let’s face it, you’re not staying here for the rooms. Moxy Times Square is home to Magic Hour, one of the largest rooftop bars in New York, with an amusement park design and regular DJ’s.

Hotel Edison Time Square, West 47th Street

Cheap hotels to stay in New York -

If you want to be in the thick of the action in Midtown Manhattan, the Edison will be hard to beat for location and price. Just a half a block will have you at Broadway and Times Square. This combined with the fact that rates at the Edison are generally unbeatable for this type of location, makes it a popular choice for many travelling to New York on a budget.

The hotel was built in the 1930’s and to this day holds onto it’s art deco design – I’m sure if the walls could talk, they would have decades of incredible stories from the hotel’s iconic Grand Ballroom.

Classic rooms at the Edison are traditional in style but if you want something a little more modern, have a look the more recently renovated Signature rooms, some of which come with a small terrace and sleep up to six.
